One crore steps for pedestrian safety

T’puram: A campaign ‘One Crore Steps for Safer Roads’, focusing on pedestrian safety, will reach the city on Sunday.

Organized by NGO Drive Smart Drive Safe, the campaign involves walk from Kanyakumari to Kashmir by Subramanian Narayanan.

Narayanan, who is an employee of Hella India, is planning to walk a distance of 3,600km in 60 days covering 20 cities across south, west, and north India. The programme, supported by the ministry of road transport and highways, was flagged off from Kanyakumari on Saturday and will reach Kashmir on October 2.

Volunteers of Scouts and Guides, employees of Aegis Global, volunteers of Yamaha Motors, students of Women’s College, auto association members, CRPF men, traffic police and general public will join Narayanan to show their solidarity at 7am on Sunday from the Infosys campus.

Mathew A John, DIG, CRPF Thiruvananthapuram, along with commissioner of police P Prakash will join the walk. People will be taking safety pledges and will be sensitized on road deaths.

“We will capture videos as evidence of walking and difficulties on the way. The project envisages participation from the general public in the form of short walks to show their solidarity with Subramanian Narayanan and the cause, either on the route of this walk or by ‘walk donation’ from anywhere in the country. Walk donation, is where people can ‘donate the steps they walked’ on www.onecroresteps.com,” representatives of the NGO said. tnn
